Summer Travel Teams

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about 10-12 Summer Baseball

1.  Are all the teams travel teams?  If so, how far do they typically go?

No, there's the "in house" league that plays on Wednesdays and Saturdays.   The A and B teams for levels 10 through 12 do travel for away games (from Westwood to Cohasset).  Home games are generally at Milton High School.

2.  How many games are there in a week?

Usually 2-3 with a couple of practices.

3.  Can I arrange for a car-pool?

Depending on where you live and where the other players live, that might be a great option!  Check with your coach for the roster.

4.  What time are the games?

Usually 5:45  (unless they're under the lights in which a 7:30 start might be possible).

5.  Are there tournaments?

Yes, each team gets signed up for at least one tournament (usually in early or late July).

6.  How long is the season?

From mid-June to August 4 or so (depending on the success of the team--it could last until about the 10th if the team keeps winning).

7.  Does everyone make a summer team, or are there cuts?

For each level 10 through 12, there will be an “A” and a “B” team.  Those who attend the clinics have the best chance of making these travel teams.  Those who aren’t selected will be assigned to the in-house league which meets twice a week on Wednesday evening and Saturday morning.

8.  How are the “A” and “B” teams selected?

Each major league coach (and his staff) observes players at games and at the clinics during the season.  At the end of the spring season, each coach must submit a ballot upon which he/she identifies the top players in the league (excepting the players on his/her own team) to the summer coordinator (Tom Lane).  The coordinator with the Coaches Committee selects the head coach of each level from among the parents of the top vote-getters.  Together, Tom and the head coach of each level tabulate the votes and finalize the composition and size of the A and B teams.

9.  What is the general philosophy about absences?

The coach will communicate his/her expectations to you.  The 12A team expects presence at all practices and games, but the other teams may have different expectations depending on the size of the team.

10.  If my child doesn’t make the A or B team, what are my options?

Your child may still participate in the in-house league at a reduced fee.  Some players choose to play in the in-house league due to vacations and time commitments.  Last year, we heard many positive comments from those who participated in the in-house league!
